Florida in summer is what most people think they don’t want: hot, humid, afternoon thunderstorms. Here’s the other side of that: Gulf water that’s warm enough to swim in without convincing yourself, beaches that empty out every afternoon during those twenty-minute storms and then refill with people who know this is part of the deal, and rental rates that drop significantly compared to the spring break and snowbird months.
Bradenton in June, July, and August is a good place to be if you go in knowing what it is.
The Gulf Water
Gulf of Mexico water on this stretch of coast is calm, clear, and warm. There are no significant waves to manage with young children. The bottom is sandy and shallow for a long way out. Anna Maria Island — twelve minutes from our Bradenton homes — has some of the best public beach access on the Gulf Coast, and in summer, the water temperature sits around 86°F. You won’t need to talk yourself into getting in.
The Summer Pattern
Mornings are hot but manageable. By early afternoon, the heat peaks and the Gulf builds sea-breeze thunderstorms — dramatic, fast, usually over within half an hour. Smart summer visitors plan beach time for 9 a.m. to noon, come back to the pool for lunch and an hour in the air conditioning, then head back out around 4 p.m. when the storms have passed and the light turns golden.
Our Bradenton homes both have heated pools, so the midday hours aren’t wasted — they’re pool hours. The game rooms mean nobody is bored when a storm hits.
What’s Open and Worth It
De Soto National Memorial stays open year-round and is uncrowded in summer. Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota (twenty minutes south) is one of the best aquariums in Florida and a good full-morning activity for families. The weekly Bradenton Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings in Riverwalk and is worth the trip even in heat — vendors thin out but the core produce and food vendors show up regardless.
The Price Argument
High season on Anna Maria Island is December through April. Summer rates are noticeably lower and availability is genuinely better. If your vacation dates are flexible and you can do July over February, you’ll spend less for the same property and actually get your preferred dates.
